Neuer Mendelsteig

This tour leads below the Mendelpass and features a brand-new bike trail for cyclists. From Kaltern, start pedalling uphill for about 650 m elevation gain on the Mendelstraße. The ascent is relatively smooth. Here you can test your racing bike skills, as the Mendel has been declared the favourite route in South Tyrol among racing bikers. After the 650 m elevation gain a small sign to the left indicates the start of the climb. At the start, the trail kicks off steeply, further on it winds on in wide and well-trod bends across the forest. Well-trained bikers will think nothing of it. The path is pretty wide and therefore a bit demanding, but also easy to ride on.

On the forest path take the somewhat wider sunken lane downhill, which leads to the edge of Kaltern - a piece of cake for skilled technical bikers. Here, follow the tour across six beautiful trails and gravel paths across the Kaltern sport area and the Kardatsch hiking trail until you reach Lake Kaltern. Even if from here on you have to overcome a further 180 m elevation gain until you reach the starting point, this downhill stretch is well worth it. The trails to the lake have that perfect flow and can be easily ridden. This is why this half-day tour is a lovely, fun excursion.
