Mitterberg

For everyone who’s already visited Kaltern - or driven by it - the sight of the Mitterberg isn’t anything new: a mossy hill covered by forests and muddy-red stones which stretches out from the centre of the Etschtal valley between the river Etsch and lake Kaltern. However, many don’t know that across the Mitterberg lies a network of more than 600 km of paths: an ideal stomping ground for bikers of every level. The Mitterberg circuit is a dedicated biking tour. The stretch won’t lead you to the Mitterberg, rather right around it. An amazing tour for beginners and families, but it’s also an ideal light training circuit. Head off from Kaltern down the bike path towards Auer, coast Lake Kaltern and then round the southern edge of the Mitterberg until the Etschbrücke bridge. Here, right before Auer, the path merges in the Etschtal bike path, which leads south towards Trento, and north towards Bozen.

The tour coasts the Etsch river and keeps its distance, more often than not, from the clamour and confusion of the motorway. You can bike in both directions on the Mitterberg circuit as it consists exclusively of asphalted bike paths, but the direction listed here is ideal for an afternoon ride when the Ora, a southerly wind, aids bikers and pushes them along the flat Etsch bike path towards Bozen. Just before Bozen, the bike path snakes along on the old train tracks on a slightly uphill route towards Kaltern.

Alternatives
At path marking 16, to the south of Lake Kaltern, continue on the bike path to Auer across numerous easy, somewhat longer, tours, for example tour 1 Mitterberg, 3 Egna/Neumarkt, 4 Salorno/Salurn, or 7 Mezzocorona.

Don’t miss out on...
- Lake Kaltern
- Bozen, the region’s capital city
- Sigmundskron Castle and the Messner Mountain Museum
