Girlan/Cornaiano

The Cornaiano tour is a short and easy mountain bike tour for beginners and less trained cyclists who would like to improve their skills. Cornaiano is a small wine village in the neighbouring municipality of Appiano/Eppan which lies on the northern part of the Mitterberg. From here you can head to a couple of spots with breathtaking views across Bozen and the Etschtal valley. The bike tour to Cornaiano stands out for its pretty views of the South Tyrolean Unterland and its well-cared for vineyards. From Kaltern, head at a relaxed pace on the asphalted bike path to Appiano. This bike path is located on the old railway track that once connected Bozen and Kaltern. This type of railway tracks is a guarantee that the route will only have gentle climbs and downhill stretches, as trains could not climb more than 6% in the past.

Today, only the steam train in Kaltern is a memento to the long-gone era of steam trains. There’s a lot going on during weekends with nice weather on this bike path - bikers, families, children, dogs - we recommend you cycle with care. After approximately five km you’ll reach Appiano, to then take the narrow asphalt path to the right all the way uphill to Cornaiano. After that, continue on easy gravel and forest paths in the shade over the Mitterberg, riding past the crossroads at Purzelmoos and the Montiggl Lakes. During summer you can take a refreshing dip in the water before continuing via Montiggl village and the Montiggl plain back downhill to Kaltern.

Alternatives
Path marking 10: Follow the bike path towards Bolzano/Bozen and follow Tour 2 Mitterberg in the opposite direction.

Don’t miss out on …

- the Montiggl Forest
- the Small and Big Montiggl lakes
