Excursion to Altenburg

Start: St. Anton sport zone
Finish: Altenburg
Duration: approx 1 1/4 hours
Elevation gain: approx 163 m
Route: from the starting point, follow sign no. 11.
Worth seeing: the Gothic Vigilius chapel in Altenburg, which was officially mentioned for the first time in 1288, featuring a beautiful, wood carved winged alter. On the tower, an effigy of Saint Cristopher, on the western facade a fresco of Saint Wilgefortis. The figure of a bearded woman at the cross throws her right shoe to a violinist (a Medieval legend). Near to the church, twenty Roman brick graves were discovered, proof that a Roman road crossed Altenburg. Behind the church you’ll find a unique scenic view. Admire Lake Kaltern below and the landscape of the South Tyrolean Wine Road, and the orchards of the South Tyrolean Unterland; on the other side, admire the Mitterberg with the Leuchtenburg ruin and behind it the mountains of the Etsch valley. In the backdrop, the Schwarzhorn and Weißhorn mountains, the rocky walls of the Latermar and to the left, from far away, the summits of the Rosengarten, and further to the left the Schlern (left from the Massif you can also see the summits of the Santner and Euringer).
