The northern wine trail
The circular bike trail of the northern Wine trail kicks off from Piazza Walther, the historical centre of Bolzano, and leads bikers to Cardano via Rencio, crossing the Gries neighbourhood to Terlano, Vilpiano, and Nalles. Return via Andriano and Frangarto to Bolzano. The Bolzano-Terlano stretch, at the start of the trail, can also be done by train.
We recommend you also take a detour to Castel Roncolo, a stellar example of Medieval architecture with superbly preserved frescoes. From the Moritzring, behind Gries, the wine trail crosses a unique landscape peppered with historical mansions and buildings. In Vilpiano, the route swaps to the other side of the valley towards Nalles, across the wine village of Andriano. The trail continues towards Frangarto to Firmiano Castle. The impressive castle towering above Bolzano has been the headquarters of the Messner Mountain Museum since 2004. It hosts an extensive collection on everything mountaineering. Back in Bolzano, you can revel in the Italian bella vita by sipping a cappuccino and allowing your gaze to travel across contemporary art and the architecture of the region’s capital. If you’re interested in art, we also recommend you visit the Museion, the most important South Tyrolean museum for modern and contemporary art.
