Kaltern or Caltare, oder Chaltar, Chalter, Chaldar, Chaltaren, Caldarum, Caldarium, Kalthari. Regardless, it hints to the latin ‘caldarum’, i.e. ‘brass pot’ which also features in the coat of arms. A clue to the fact that a settlement was to be found here already in the time of the Romans. Kaltern was first mentioned in written documents in 1220 (wine from Kaltern is mentioned) or 1273 (Kaltern becomes a court), and in 1250 there is word of a local wine urn, the ‘urna d Kaltern’.
