GEFÄNGNIS LE CARCERI Gallery
The Le Carceri Gallery is located in the former prisons (hence its name) between the market square and Piazza dei Rottenburg. With a calendar packed with exhibitions featuring international and national artists, culture vultures will feel right at home here.
The former prison in the district of Kaltern was closed permanently at the start of the 1970s. Ownership was first transferred from the state to the region and then to the municipality of Kaltern. At first, the facilities were used to host the Social and Health Municipal Administration offices. The larger part of the former prison, especially the cell blocks, was sanitised in line with the prevailing regulations at the time, overseen by Gunther Plaickner, architect: the building was thus transformed into a very special cultural venue.
You can still feel the cell-like character of these small and low-ceilinged rooms with bars still a decorating the windows. The size of the cells hasn’t changed. The only noticeable change to the rooms were the new wooden floors and the partial renovation of the stairs. The historical fittings and furniture (two tiled stoves, the iron bars on the windows as well as wooden doors in the individual cells) were also preserved.

Hochparterre Salotto Gallery, Sparkassenhaus
The Sparkasse Forum Gallery is located on the market square above the Kaltern Sparkasse bank. It was given a facelift by architect Walter Angonese and is well worth a visit just for its architecture and design. In the newly created exhibition rooms, visitors can always stumble upon a series of different pictures and paintings.
