Kaltern is one of the largest areas for pomi - and viticulture in South Tyrol. In autumn all farmes spent most ot their time in the open amongst their apple trees and vineyards. It’s harvesting time. But not only. It’s also chessnut time.
Many Restaurants invite you to experience the traditional “
Törggelen” – a local term that originates from the “torggl” (wine press). Törggelen is done at harvest time in the fall. This is when the sweet new wines, called “Sußer” are tasted and celebrated. It is a great tradition to try some of the local farmers’ specialties when you go “törggeling”. Usually this consists of homemade cured ham, called “speck” and sausages, dumplings, smoked pork and polenta. For dessert, roasted chestnuts and sweet, homemade “krapfen” pastries are always served.
Every Tuesday, Friday, Saturday and on public holidays
starting in mid
-
Sptember and ending in mid - November, a local farmer will roast chessnuts in the Square of Kaltern town. Of course you will be able to buy some of these roasted chessnuts but not only. Many other quality products which were grown and packaged by local farmers will be sold on the above stated days.
